Site Tips
Tip OneDON'T STEAL!
Stealing is very much illegal.
Even removing the credit or stealing any part of someone's coding is illegal.
If it is not yours don't use it unless you have permission from the original owner and if you have permission create a credits page and link them back.
Tip Two
Learn FTP!
It's very crucial when making websites because well its what you use to create the website when you have a subdomain/domain! Even some hosts require you to learn FTP before even applying to get hosted. To find some FTP tutorials I recommend googling FTP tutorials and you'll find plenty. There are many different types of FTP. Ones I've used are FTP programs and online FTP, they're the most common. I prefer online FTP because it is WAY EASIER to use (its like editing from freewebs).
Tip Three
Organization is key.
This is very important because hosts don't want their site to look sloppy just because of a hostee's unorganized site.
One way to organize your site is to categorize. Catergorize your content by splitting the content page into sections (i.e graphics, resources, tutorials, other, and etc). Categorize your blog posts too. It makes your site look neater & professional because your visitors can view your old blog posts and who knows you may need it for something you blogged about in the past.
Tip Four
Have a variety of content.
You don't need to have 200 layouts to have tons of content but make a little bit of everything.
Like make 5 headers, 10 layouts, 3 blog headers, etc
It may not seem like a lot but you have more of a variety for your visitors to choose from
and if you keep updating your content it will keep growing and growing so you'll have more & more!
Tip Five
Read tutorials
I know this sounds lame but it will increase your knowledge of HTML, CSS, and etc.
For example, maybe you've always wanted to learn how to convert your site to php, install cutenews or something else. Even try different things you may never install or even add to your website but increase your knowledge, help people and also the more you know the easier it is if you're having trouble to fix the problem..
Tip Six
Practice! Practice!
If you're first starting out sign up for freewebs and show off your work! It shows you have html experience and knowledge && its a big plus when you apply. You'll get better and better too!
Tip Seven
Credit Everything!
Credit every single thing you use! It may be a pain but if you don't you will be considered a stealer/jocker, either one is bad. It's not even that hard! Just make a page title it credits and post your sources! For an example of a credit page feel free to view mine here.
Tip Eight
Update!
Always update your site! You don't need to update your site everyday but try atleast 2x a week. It shows you're devoted to your site and active too which is definitely a + for hosts.
Tip Nine
Have your own creative flare!
Make things you've never seen before and think look cool! Experiment! Who know what you'll get?!
Tip Ten
Applying 101
If you think your site looks pretty decent, go apply for hosting! If you don't get accepted the first time keep trying & applying at other websites. In the end a host will accept you.
